2014 NFL Mock Draft 4.0

By on April 20, 2014

The 2014 NFL Draft will begin with the 1st round on Thursday, May 8th at 8pm ET. The 2nd & 3rd round will take place on Friday, May 9th with the final rounds (4-7) on Saturday, May 10th. This is the 79th annual NFL Draft and projects to feature some of the most depth in recent history. Polarizing stars Johnny Manziel and Jadeveon Clowney highlight the class, while Sammy Watkins and Teddy Bridgewater also contribute to the elite, headlining talent that will be added to an NFL roster this spring in one of the most exciting events in all of sports.

There has been a lot of talk about the quarterbacks falling in this draft. Don’t be fooled by the media, QB is the most important position in all of sports and teams will always overdraft them to fill needs.

Round 1

#1

Houston Texans Banner

The last time the Texans held the #1 overall pick they had to decide between the athletically-gifted  NC State DE Mario Williams or Heisman-winning USC RB Reggie Bush. They have landed in a similar position where most mock drafts have them taking either athletically-gifted South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney, Heisman-winning Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel, or dark horse UCF QB Blake Bortles. Our previous mock drafts have cycled through both QBs,with QB being the Texans biggest need after shipping out Matt Schaub to the Raiders, but Clowney’s immense potential on a defense with JJ Watt is too much for them to pass on. With the 1st pick in the 2nd round, the Texans will be able to find a QB that new head coach, Bill O’Brien, picks to mold into the Texans starter. Veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was signed to hold it down until a rookie is ready to take over; a scenario that resembles the “old school” approach that O’Brien likes.5 South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney

#2

St Louis Rams Banner

The Rams offensive line has been holding back former #1-overall pick, QB Sam Bradford, for years. Finding weapons at WR has also been an issue and Clemson WR Sammy Watkins is going to be very tempting at pick #2. If the Rams don’t trade back with a team eager for one of the top QBs, Jeff Fisher is going to shore up the trenches with this pick and select one of the top tackles available. Auburn LT Greg Robinson helped pave the way for one of the top college rushing attacks in the nation in 2013. His athleticism puts him slightly above Texas A&M LT Jake Matthews.

#3

Jacksonville Jaguars Banner

During the pre-draft process, Johnny Manziel said the Texans would regret the day they passed on him. He may have had their AFC South rival Jaguars in mind as they also have a glaring need at QB and an even bigger need for a face of the franchise. Surely the Jaguars wouldn’t pass on the charismatic, Heisman winning QB for another QB in the draft… However, Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater has been the #1 QB prospect since the 2013 draft concluded. A poor pro day and over-analysis by the “draft experts” should not impact their selection. Bridgewater is a smart, tough franchise QB and would make the Jaguars an interesting team in their 2nd year under head coach, Gus Bradley. Their free agent acquisitions have set them up to take the best player available (BPA), but getting the top prospect for their top need would make this the best selection for a struggling franchise.3 Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater
