5 Reasons to Hate Roger Goodell

#3 – Spygate & Bountygate

NewEngland_logo (1)Roger Goodell suspended players, coaches, and took away draft picks in two controversial events in NFL history without ever being very clear (or honest) with fans regarding why.

Spygate refers to the September 9, 2007 game where the Patriots were caught videotaping the Jets defensive coaches’ signals from a sideline location. Patriots HC Bill Belichick was fined $500,000 and the team was fined $250,000 and docked their 2008 1st round draft pick. The videos were all destroyed by the NFL.

Months went by and rumors began to surface that the Patriots had been filming team signals since their Super Bowl XXXVI victory against the Rams.

What did the NFL find in their investigation, and why did the NFL destroy the tapes?

Ask a Patriots fans for their uncensored conspiracy theory.

Bountygate was when Roger Goodell knew the Saints had installed a bounty system (bonuses for knocking out opposing players) in Gregg Williams’ defense, but lacked the actual proof. That didn’t matter to Goodell, he was going to shame players, coaches and team executives anyways.

Goodell involved 27 Saints players, DC Williams, GM Mickey Loomis, and HC Sean Payton in the Saints Bounty system. The suspension of Payton for the entire season was unprecedented in the NFL and two 2nd round draft picks were taken as punishment.

Jonathan Vilma hates Roger Goodell so much for the way he treated him during the investigation and for what he did to the Saints that this sign is displayed in his New Orleans restaurant.
