Top Alternatives for Redskins Name Change

By on June 19, 2014

The US Patent office canceling the trademark of the Washington Redskins team name is the biggest step towards real “progress” of changing the name that has been held by the team since 1932. Whether or not you are actually offended by the name, you are likely tired of the topic, especially when Redskins owner Dan Snyder says he is not changing the name. Period.

Although, now that the merchandise sales of Redskins gear will be affected with the trademark open to the public, 30 other teams’ profits will also be affected since 31 NFL teams share merchandise revenue (all except for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys).

We are about to see how firm the ground is that Dan Snyder stands on once he has pissed off all the other NFL owners AND Nike with decreases in Redskins merchandise sales.

While the Redskins name change topic was once a bunch of people whining from their soap boxes, things are actually about to get real.

So now that it is a matter of “when” the name changes as opposed to “if,” we might as well look at some alternatives for the Redskins name.

99Designs.com held a contest in October 2013 to design a new name and logo for the Washington Redskins. These are the best options the internet can provide:

D.C. Dragons. Black/Gray uniforms with Red/Orange highlights a la Smaug. RG3 on fire, literally. Moves away from “Aren’t they the state Seattle plays in?” and more embodies “We are the team of the nation’s capital.” The would be logo is my profile picture.

Sorry, can’t use redskin potatoes… couch potatoes might be offended. They ought to just make it the Washington Reds, and use the old hammer and sickle as their symbol. Then again, the Democrats might be offended.

The author is completely wrong about how trademarking works. The Redskins don’t need a registered trademark. They can and will sue if someone tries using their brand identity, logo, colors, name, etc.

To sue for that, all you have to do is prove in court that someone is using a brand identity that the public understands is yours, and/or that their product could be easily mistaken as associated with your brand.

The ONLY thing trademarks do, is list out ahead of time the items that are your brand, so you don’t have to bother making an argument in court, you can just point to the list. Its like getting the PTO to accept that you’ve called dibs.

Doesn’t matter for the Redskins, because after 80 years in the league, and being a nationally televised NFL team, they will have no problem convincing a judge that their name, logo colors etc are obviously associated with their brand.

So, no, fans can;t just start selling their own stuff on Teespring with impunity.

Not that anyone cares, but I like the REDHAWKS.

The Redtails would be interesting for an obscure reason. Prior to 1960 there was an airline known as Capital Airlines based out of Washington. When they merged with United Airlines, internally the former Capital employees were referred to as ‘redtails’, due to the fact their logo included a red tail.
