2014 NFL Mock Draft 3.4 (Three Rounds)
#9
Texas A&M LT Jake Matthews - EJ Manuel has potential to be a great QB, but he needs a better offensive line and more weapons to catch the ball. Jake Matthews could’ve been a top-5 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, but returned to move to left tackle and only falls out of the top-5 due to the amount of depth in this years cass.
#10
Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert - The Lions signed Golden Tate to a big deal this offseason and, unless Mike Evans gets past the Bills, they need to address the defensive side of the ball with their top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. With their pick of the top secondary players available, HaHa Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor are also potential picks here, but Justin Gilbert is the best overall DB in this draft.
#11
Alabama MLB C.J. Mosley - The Titans need a leader in the middle of their defense, one of the more underrated units in the league, and C.J. Mosley could help elevate them to the next level. Depending on the pass rushers available, Anthony Barr is a potential selection here if they believe he could be an edge rusher in their 4-3.
#12
North Carolina TE Eric Ebron - The Giants need more offensive weapons for Eli Manning to be successful. After losing their long time Tight End coach, they won’t be able to get the same production out of late round tight ends as they have in the past. Ebron has the chance to be special with frequent comparisons to Vernon Davis with his freak athleticism.
#13
Michigan T Taylor Lewan - If the Rams use the #2 pick on a luxury pick such as Sammy Watkins, their 2nd first round pick will focus on building the offensive line. Jeff Fisher believes in winning in the trenches and is more likely to pick Greg Robinson at #2 and hoping a player like Mike Evans is available at #13, but that is not the case in this scenario. If the Rams go Robinson at #2 and they don’t want to reach on these other WRs with this pick, a replacement for CB Cortland Finnegan could also be an option.
#14
Florida State DT Timmy Jernigan - The Bears have been moving from the Tampa 2 defense to more of a conventional 4-3 defense and their free agent signings have focused on building a rotation at defensive end. With Henry Melton leaving for Dallas, there is a hole in the middle of that defensive line that could be filled by Timmy Jernigan. After running out of steam in the National Championship game, some question his fitness and ability to be a 3-down player. Defensive Tackle appears to be the Bears’ biggest need after signing safeties Mundy & Jennings, decreasing the likelihood of selecting Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor.
#15
Notre Dame T/G Zack Martin - The Steelers will be hoping for one of the top-3 offensive tackles to fall to them, which is unlikely but they will settle for the versatile Zack Martin. They will be going with Will Allen and/or Mike Mitchell at safety next to Troy Polamalu. Steelers are expecting Jason Worilds to provide them the pass rush needed for Dick LaBeau’s defense to function, although he has yet to do it consistently and last year’s 1st round pick Jarvis Jones was a disappointment vs the pass.
#16
Pittsburgh DT Aaron Donald - The Cowboys have lost their two best players on the defensive line this offseason in DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher. They signed Henry Melton to be the 3-technique in their Tampa-2 defense and, although Aaron Donald would play the same position, that shouldn’t stop them from taking the best player available on the defensive line. Aaron Donald has seen the biggest rise in stock through the pre-draft process and could be a disruptive pass rusher in Rod Marinelli’s D-Line rotation. A pass rusher would be a great option for the Cowboys here, but Jerry Jones is unlikely to draft Kony Ealy and give him the responsibility of replacing DeMarcus Ware.
