2014 NFL Mock Draft 4.0

The Chargers defense allowed opposing offenses to move the ball at will in 2013, while riding the arm of Philip Rivers into the playoffs. Notre Dame NT Louis Nix III was inconsistent at times, but with his 342-pound frame he could develop into a disruptive player to clog the middle of their defense.

Chargers Previous Mocks: DE Stephon Tuitt

Josh Gordon looks like a steal in the 3rd round of the supplemental draft and will provide their new QB with a great #1 WR. To take the pressure off Gordon and newly acquired RB Ben Tate, the Browns may look past their needs in the defensive secondary to select the explosive playmaker Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks.

Browns Previous Mocks: WR Davante Adams, CB Bradley Roby, WR Marqise Lee

The Saints made a huge splash in free agency and signed the top player of any position, FS Jairus Byrd. Rob Ryan also added veteran Champ Bailey to the mix and plans to play him at CB, despite much of the NFL thinking he has nothing left in the tank. Bailey may be better suited as a mentor to the younger CB. With the Saints, TCU CB Jason Verrett would get ample time needed to come back from offseason surgery for a torn labrum he played with for most of the 2013 season. If not for the trend of teams searching for bigger CBs like Richard Sherman and Aqib Talib, Verrett (5’9″ 179 lbs.) would be the top CB in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Saints Previous Mocks: DE/OLB Kony Ealy & CB Bradley Roby

The Panthers really dropped the ball at the WR position this offseason. They had the chance to add a top free agent WR such as Hakeem Nicks or Eric Decker, but wound up losing Steve Smith (released) and Brandon LaFell (free agent signed with Patriots) instead. When the Panthers finally recognized the lack of weapons for their franchise QB. they signed some journeymen WRs (Jason Avant, Jerricho Cotchery, and Tiquan Underwood) to fill the depth chart. WR remains their biggest need and Florida State WR Kelvin Benjamin is a big, fast playmaker (6’5″ 235 lbs; 4.61 40-yard dash) that Cam Newton would love throwing up jump balls to. Don’t be surprised to see the Panthers move up in the draft to target the WR of their choice if they don’t feel comfortable waiting for one to fall to them this late in the 1st round.
