Biggest NFL Draft Busts: Where Are They Now?
#1 - QB JaMarcus Russell
Picked 1st Overall in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders
Record as starter: 7-18
Career Stats:
18 TDs
23 INTs
52.1% completed passes
JaMarcus Russell was being labeled as one of the most physically gifted QB prospects to ever enter the NFL Draft and the late Raiders owner, Al Davis, had a soft spot for such players. He proceeded to holdout until the 1st week of the season while negotiating a 6-year/$68 Million contract with $31.5 Million guaranteed. He only started in the final game of his rookie season, in which he did not finish due to injury. Russell was named the starter for the 2008 season and he showed flashes of greatness; finishing with back-to-back wins. In his 3rd season, he was benched by November for Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye, putting him at #3 on the QB depth chart. After ballooning to 300 pounds in April 2010, he was released in May. The Raiders tried to bring him along slowly and mold him into an NFL QB, but the lack of work ethic from Russell was the main reason for his failure in the NFL. He was arrested on July 5, 2010 for possession of codeine syrup without a valid prescription.
Currently: Attempting a comeback. The Chicago Bears brought him in for a 2013 workout and stated they were not interested in bringing in a 4th QB. Two months later they signed 2 other QBs to their roster.
