Biggest NFL Draft Busts: Where Are They Now?
#6 - OT Tony Mandarich
Picked 2nd Overall in the 1989 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers
Going into the 1989 NFL Draft, Tony Mandarich was considered the greatest offensive lineman prospect ever. The Packers passed on Hall Of Famers Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Deion Sanders, Steve Atwater, Eric Metcalf, and Andre Rison in the 1989 draft to select the “Incredible Bulk.” Mandarich posted insane measurables in pre-draft workouts:
6’6″
330 lbs.
4.65 Forty Yard Dash
30″ Vertical Jump
10′ 3″ Standing Jump
39 Bench Reps of 225lbs.
After a contract holdout, forcing him to miss the first week of his rookie season, he was never able to live up to expectations in 3 years with the Packers. His attitude also made him an unfavorable teammate. He was quoted “I am not like other players, I am Tony Mandarich, and they have to understand that. If they don’t like it, that is just the way I am and they are going to learn to like it.” Mandarich admitted to steroid use in 2008, but blamed poor work ethic for his failures as an NFL player.
