Biggest NFL Draft Busts: Where Are They Now?

By on April 15, 2014

#9 - QB Akili Smith

Picked 3rd Overall in the 1999 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals

Record as starter: 3-14

Career Stats:

5 TDs

13 INTs

46.2% completed passes

The Bengals turned down an offer from the Saints and ex-head coach, Mike Ditka, of NINE draft picks in an effort to get Ricky Williams and stayed at #3 to select Akili Smith. He missed most of training camp with a contract holdout and failed to show the athleticism in the NFL that he displayed in his one year at Oregon under QB guru, Jeff Tedford, while struggling to grasp the Bengals playbook.
